EXIF defaults The default resolution of images within EXIF is 72dpi. Thus, even though the default resolution on the web is 96dpi, EXIF resolutions are based on a 72dpi = 1x baseline. Per the EXIF spec, ResolutionUnit can be either inches or centimeters.
Basically, Exif file format is the same as JPEG file format. Exif inserts some of image/digicam information data and thumbnail image to JPEG in conformity to JPEG specification. Therefore you can view Exif format image files by JPEG compliant Internet browser/Picture viewer/Photo retouch software etc.
Exif tags are used largely to encode additional information related to image generation by digital still cameras. Exif is the abbreviation of Exchangeable image file format, though this can be argued to be a misnomer, as Exif does not relate to TIFF like e.g. JFIF relates to JPEG.
The Exif specifications define a pair of file types, mainly intended for recording technical details associated with digital photography. The two types employ different image encodings based on existing image formats and the resulting files can be read by many image software applications.
The FocalPlaneResolution tags record the actual focal plane resolutions of the main image which is written as a file after processing instead of the pixel resolution of the image sensor in the camera. It should be noted carefully that the data from the image sensor is resampled.
Archival tags are small data loggers that record dates, times, swim depths, water temperatures, body temperatures and light levels. They can record data every few seconds for up to 10 years, depending on the tags sampling frequency and battery life.
Exif metadata are restricted in size to 64 kB in JPEG images because ing to the specification this information must be contained within a single JPEG APP1 segment.
Exif version 0221 meaning. If the reference is sea level and the altitude is above sea level, 0 is given. This is all called Exchangeable image file format data. The tag value is an ASCII string compatible with the standard developed by the ASTM Technical committee. The range of values is from 0.
