To find a pattern that is more than one word long, enclose the string with single or double quotation marks. The grep command can search for a string in groups of files. When it finds a pattern that matches in more than one file, it prints the name of the file, followed by a colon, then the line matching the pattern.
To recursively search for a pattern, invoke grep with the -r option (or --recursive ). When this option is used grep will search through all files in the specified directory, skipping the symlinks that are encountered recursively.
The tac command is the reverse of the cat command. It is also known as cat backward. It will display the file content in reverse order. It prints the last line first, then second last and so on.
The grep utility searches the given input files selecting lines which match one or more patterns. The type of patterns is controlled by the options specified. By default, a pattern matches an input line if any regular expression (RE) in the pattern matches the input line without its trailing newline.
tac -r: This option will interpret the separator as a regular expression. tac -s : This option use STRING as the separator instead of newline. tac help : This option will display the help text and exit. tac version: This option will give the version information and exit.
If you do not specify either option, grep (or egrep or fgrep) takes the first non-option argument as the pattern for which to search. If grep finds a line that matches a pattern, it displays the entire line. If you specify multiple input files, the name of the current file precedes each output line.
Grep Command. grep is a built-in Linux command that prints lines that match a given pattern. It returns all the lines of a file that contain a certain string by default, and the command is also case-sensitive.
