The most basic types of tack are bridles, bits, saddles, saddle pads, and other types. English bridles come in a variety of types, depending on the use of the horse and the bit that is needed.
Leather saddles are embossed with metal stamps on the panel under the saddle flap. The mark is usually your postcode, though any other alpha / numerical mark can be made the choice is yours. The important thing is the saddle is marked so it is identifiable from another brown or black saddle.
A good way to monitor your tack health is to clean and condition it.What to look out for when cleaning tack: Cracking, thin, or dry leather. Stretched holes. Rusting, loose, or bent buckles. Check the girth for any signs of wear.
Look under the flap for the name, country of origin, and any identifying serial number. These often are stamped on the sweat panel or under the leg flap near the girth straps. Common saddle brands are Crosby, Kieffer, and Steuben, but there are many others.
Use magic marker to write your name, initials, or horses name on the spine of the pad. You can also sew identification labels into the pad. Nameplates are also available for the crown of English bridles. Bridle tags provide a more subtle way to label your bridle.
Tack safety check Stretched holes. Elongated buckle holes are a sign of weakening leather. Loose hardware. Give all buckles, Chicago screws and hooks a solid wiggle as you clean. Cracks in the leather. Old, dry leather will usually crack before tearing, so take any fissures in leather seriously. Dont miss out!
Depending on the age of your saddle, your serial number will either be on a sewn in tag, or stamped on the under-flap of your saddle. Flaps: Length goes from 1 to 5, 1 being the shortest. The letter following the length number describes the angle of the flap; C being more forward while L is standard (more straight).
Typically, you will see the makers name or logo and then underneath the serial number will be stamped. Again, not all saddles will have it there or a number stamped at all, but this is the first place to check.
Tack is equipment or accessories equipped on horses and other equines in the course of their use as domesticated animals. This equipment includes such items as saddles, stirrups, bridles, halters, reins, bits, and harnesses.
The first two numbers indicate the year the saddle was made. The next two numbers indicate the month the saddle was made. The third and fourth numbers indicate the month the saddle was made. Therefore, a serial number starting with 0212 indicates that the saddle was made in Dec.
