The FMCSAs policy is to assign a unique USDOT identification number to each person required to identify itself with FMCSA under 49 U.S.C. 13902, 31134 and 49 C.F.R. 390.19T or 390.200T. USDOT numbers are not transferable and are assigned to only one person and remain assigned to that person forever.
There are three main types of authorities in the transportation industry that deal with moving freight from point A to point B. They are a motor carrier, broker, and freight forwarder.
A US DOT number identifies carriers operating in interstate commerce while an MC number identifies a carrier who transports regulated commodities for hire in interstate commerce. Generally, items that have been changed from their natural state are regulated commodities requiring an MC number.
How do I get a USDOT number? To get a USDOT number, new applicants must register online via the Unified Registration System. Until URS is fully implemented, there is no charge for a USDOT number. Updates can be done online via the FMCSA online registration system with your US DOT PIN, or by filing an MCS-150 form.
Some companies who operate vehicles of different sizes, and transport different equipment, may require more than one operating certification under one MC number.

Make sure the two businesses are separate. If you have two companies but operate both as a sole proprietor, you may not be able to get a second number. You should have a unique tax ID for each company that needs a DOT number. That way, there wont be any overlap when you apply for the second one.
