Federal law generally prohibits radio broadcasts without a license issued by the FCC. Anyone found operating a radio station without FCC authorization can be subject to a variety of enforcement actions, including seizure of equipment, fines and other civil and criminal penalties.
The license term for a new or renewed grant is 10 years and a copy must be kept with the aircrafts station records. You may file for renewal beginning 90 days prior to the expiration date of your license.
The classes of license, from highest to lowest are: Amateur Extra Class, General Class, and Technician Class. Before receiving a license grant, you must pass an examination administered by a team of volunteer examiners (VEs).
An individual license is not required to operate a CB station and the FCC does not renew formerly issued CB Radio Service licenses; The FCC service rules for the Citizens Band Radio Service (CBRS) are located in 47 C.F.R. Part 95.
You may take the exam at home, at work, or anywhere you have an undisturbed space that our remote proctor can observe via your webcam. See our Online Examination Requirements here. Your $90 nonrefundable exam fee covers the exam, the remote proctor expense, and filing your proof of passing certificate with the FCC.
