Pump Log Cost: 50 free records to start, $10.99 to upgrade to unlimited. Pump Log calls itself the must have app for exclusive pumpers, and for good reason.
It is typical for a mother who is breastfeeding full-time to be able to pump around 1/2 to 2 ounces total (for both breasts) per pumping session.
Pumping sessions should be kept similarly to average feeding times, i.e. 15-20 minutes and at least every 2-3 hours. A freezer-full of milk is NOT needed! The average amount needed for when away from baby is 1 oz for every hour away, i.e. 8 hour work day + 60 min commute total = 9 hours, 9-10 oz/day will do perfectly!
If you thaw breast milk in the refrigerator, use it within 24 hours. Start counting the 24 hours when the breast milk is completely thawed, not from the time when you took it out of the freezer. Once breast milk is brought to room temperature or warmed, use it within 2 hours.
When you have a newborn, youll need to pump about 8 to 12 times in 24 hours including in the middle of the night. You should aim for about 15 to 20 minutes for each pumping session.
At work, you should try pumping every three to four hours for around 15 minutes a session. This may sound like a lot, but it goes back to that concept of supply and demand. Your baby takes in milk every few hours. Pumping that often will ensure that youre able to keep up with their needs.
The research tells us that exclusively breastfed babies take in an average of 25 oz (750 mL) per day between the ages of 1 month and 6 months. Different babies take in different amounts of milk; a typical range of milk intakes is 19-30 oz per day (570-900 mL per day).
How Often to Pump. A newborn will take a bottle of breast milk approximately every 2 to 3 hours. 3 So during the first few weeks, you should try to pump at least every 2 to 3 hoursabout 8 to 12 times each dayto stimulate your body to produce a healthy milk supply.
What to expect in the first month. After the first couple weeks, you should expect to produce more milk per session, about 2 to 4 oz., and may be able to stretch out some of the overnight feedings (maybe to 4 to 5 hours between feedings). In total, you should expect to average around 8 to 10 sessions per day.
