When does settlement occur? For most stock trades, settlement occurs two business days after the day the order executes, or T+2 (trade date plus two days). For example, if you were to execute an order on Monday, it would typically settle on Wednesday.
Most options and futures contracts are cash-settled. However, an exception is listed equity options contracts, which are often settled by delivery of the actual underlying shares of stock.
Whats the T+1 settlement plan? The T+1 settlement cycle means that trade-related settlements must be done within a day, or 24 hours, of the completion of a transaction. For example, under T+1, if a customer bought shares on Wednesday, they would be credited to the customers demat account on Thursday.
For those traders who want to take their contract to expiration, there are two ways an FX contract can be settled: cash settlement or physical delivery of the currency. For many FX futures, the last trading day is generally the second business day prior to the third Wednesday of the contract month.
The settlement date for stocks and bonds is usually two business days after the execution date (T+2). For government securities and options, its the next business day (T+1). In spot foreign exchange (FX), the date is two business days after the transaction date.
What is the settlement mechanism for USD-INR options? USD-INR options contracts are cash settled in Indian Rupee. Which day is the expiry/last trading day? The expiry / last trading day for the options contract is two working days prior to the last working day of the expiry month.
Many options contracts today are cash-settled. However, a major exception is that of listed equity options contracts, which are settled by delivery of the actual underlying shares of stock.
A physical settlement requires the option seller to deliver the underlying asset if its a call. For puts, the option seller must buy the underlying asset from the buyer at the strike price. Physical settlement is more common for stocks and commodities than other financial securities.
