Even though I dont use lined paper for writing, I came across an interesting fact about margins. You know, those red lines down the left and right sides of notebook paper, or the spaces around the text in books. Margins come in handy for notes, but at one time they had a more unique purpose.
College lined paper, also known as college ruled paper, has 7.1 mm (9/32 inches) between its horizontal lines, and the vertical margin is 32 mm (1 inches) from the left-hand edge of the page. This is a very common form of lined paper. The lines are closer together to allow for more words on a single page.
The ruled lines are 11/37 inches apart and are for children still learning to write letters and numbers as well as for persons who have larger than average handwriting. Middle school, high school, and college students use medium or college ruled paper, with 9/32 inch spacing between lines.
College or Medium ruled paper has 9/32 in (7.1 mm) spacing between horizontal lines, with a vertical margin aproximatley 1-1/4 in (31.75 mm) from the left edge of the page creating around 33 actual lines on the sheet of paper.
