A strikeout looking (where the batter does not swing at a pitch that the umpire then calls strike three) is often scored with a backwards K (ꓘ), and sometimes as a K-L, CK, or Kc (the c for called strike).
When the strikeout became an official statistic, K in the word strikeout was the first letter not already being used. As single was S, triple was T, run was R, inning was I and then strikeout was K by default. K is one of the only symbols that used in todays score-keeping that was originated in the 19th century.
He had already chosen S to stand for sacrifice in a box score, so he used K for a strikeout, since that is the last letter in struck, which was at the time the most popular way to refer to a batters being out after three strikes.
K is a prominent letter in the word strike and the last letter in the word struck, as in struck out. Today, fans and scorers use the same shorthand, with a forward K for a swinging strikeout and a backward K for a batter caught looking at his third strike.
When a batter gets that last strike on a pitch that the batter chooses not to swing at it is said that they struck out looking. To strike out swinging is to get that third strike by swinging at the ball and missing.
A backward K represents the umpires third strike call against the hitter. This backward K means that the final strike against the hitter fooled them into not swinging. Since it looks strange on a baseball scorekeeping card, it stands out, which helps shine more light on that strikeout by the pitcher.
Fans, who are the real experts, didnt care as long as the home runs kept on coming. Ruth hit 714 home runs and struck out 1,330 times. He walked 2,062 times.
Why Do They Use Backwards K for Strikeout? It is said that when Chadwick created the use of K for strikeout, it is because the letter K is the most prominent letter when pronouncing the word strike.
In the scorebook, a strikeout is denoted by the letter K. A third-strike call on which the batter doesnt swing is denoted with a backward K.
(A backwards K has come to indicate that a batter struck out without swinging at the third strike.)
