pree preparing formula and storing it in the fridge can be a great time-saver and of course time is precious when youve added taking care of a child to your life however formula must be prepared safely and according to the manufacturers instructions to ensure your child doesnt get sick its best practice to keep formula in the container you bought it in this reduces the risk of cross-contamination with food residue and bacteria be sure to store all formula containers according to the manufacturers instructions which will usually indicate a cool and dark dry place the manufacturer will specify instructions for preparing formula but before preparation you should always consider washing your hands with warm water with soap as well as making sure the area that youre using to prepare the formula is clean and clear remember that tap water can be boiled in a kettle and left to cool covered for 30 or so minutes be sure to test the water using a sterile thermometer or with a few drops on

Prepared infant formula can spoil if it is left out at room temperature. Use prepared infant formula within 2 hours of preparation and within one hour from when feeding begins. If you do not start to use the prepared infant formula within 2 hours, immediately store the bottle in the fridge and use it within 24 hours.
Health Canada recommends using a bottle within two hours of starting a feed. If your baby doesnt finish all of their feed, throw away the rest. It may seem wasteful, but its safer for your baby. The leftover formula may become contaminated by harmful bacteria, which can thrive and breed in warm environments.
In fact, if your little one has had some of a bottle but doesnt want the rest, you should dump it within an hour. Dont put it in the fridge for later use. Milk-based products are notorious for growing bacteria. Once your baby has drunk from a bottle, bacteria is introduced and the formula shouldnt be saved.
You can start by offering your baby 1 to 2 ounces of infant formula every 2 to 3 hours in the first days of life if your baby is only getting infant formula and no breast milk. Give your baby more if he or she is showing signs of hunger. Most infant formula-fed newborns will feed 8 to 12 times in 24 hours.
If your baby did not finish the bottle, use the leftover milk within 2 hours after the baby is finished feeding. After 2 hours, leftover breast milk should be discarded.
Once a container of infant formula is opened, store in a cool, dry place with the lid tightly closed. Do not store it in the refrigerator. Most infant formulas need to be used within 1 month of opening the container (check the label). When you first open the container, write the date on the lid to help you remember.
Bottles should be cleaned after every feeding. If your baby does not finish drinking a bottle within 2 hours, throw away the unfinished formula. Germs can grow quickly if breast milk or formula is added to a partially used bottle, or if a used bottle is only rinsed, rather than cleaned.
Use freshly boiled drinking water from the tap to make up a feed. Do not use artificially softened water or water that has been boiled before. Leave the water to cool in the kettle for no more than 30 minutes. Then it will stay at a temperature of at least 70C.
For a bottle of formula, prepared at 70C to cool to a safe temperature of approximately 37C, it will need to sit for at least 30 minutes, possibly longer. This may allow bacteria time to multiply and is contradictory to usual safety advice for any other foods.
If your baby didnt finish a bottle, can you reuse it? If your baby starts a bottle of formula but doesnt finish it within an hour, toss it. Dont refrigerate and reheat leftovers. Bacteria from your babys mouth can seep into the bottle, contaminate the formula, and make them sick.
