Hi. Lee Phillips. I want to talk about where people keep their legal documents the important stuff You stuff it in a safe deposit box, right? Wrong. The problem is the kids, you cant get into the safe deposit box. I actually had a safe deposit box. Kristy and I put a bunch of stuff in it 40 years ago. and we found the keys I didnt even know he had a safe deposit box. and trust me when you die the family isnt going to know theres a safe deposit box and they may not be able to get into it. So the documents--I dont know I dont think you want them there. When I do a living revocable trust, and a will, and that sort of stuff for people I, as the lawyer, always keep a file with an originally signed document in it. And that document, originally signed, is as good as anything. I tell my clients go home, put it in your file cabinet, and use it. These documents, most of them, are things that you use. Oh, youve got deeds. Do I need to keep a deed? No not really. Its on file down at the

The short answer is no - legal professionals still use bates numbering - but documents and discoverable information have become overwhelmingly electronic. One thing to keep in mind is that native document productions usually can not include a physical bates stamp without first being imaged.
For example, if XYZ company produces 25,000 pages to an opponent, it may Bates number the production XYZ000001 - XYZ025000. Some lawyers refer to Bates numbers as Bates stamps because at one time the numbers were physically stamped on each page.
There is nothing built into Word to do this. If you convert to pdf, docHub can do it.
Bates Numbering For a single document, open the file, then select Tools / Legal Tools / Bates Numbering. Since Current Document is already selected, continue by clicking Next Make choices for your Bates number by selecting position, font, prefix / suffix and more.
For digital documents in PDF form, bates numbers are added to the header or footer sections of documents to help in the unique identification of pages.
Bates numbers (bates stamps, bates labels) are numbers used to uniquely identify pages within a set of documents. Bates numbers are used in almost all law firms as an agreed-upon method between parties to ensure a common naming convention when referring to given pages.
The Board strongly encourages briefs and accompanying exhibits to be sequentially numbered, also known as Bates Numbering. Bates Numbering can either be done within the PDF itself starting at the first page of the document or it can be handwritten at the bottom right hand corner of the page.
Select Edit Insert Bates Numbering Remove to permanently remove Bates numbers from currently open files.
While the original Bates stamps only used numbers (up to a maximum of 9999), there is no set format for Bates numbering. It may be purely numeric or alphanumeric. Either way, Bates numbering is essentially a paper-based method, most useful for printed productions or page-based images.
Bates Numbering (or Bates Stamping) assigns unique identifiers to each page in a collection of documents.Add Bates Numbers to a PDF. Open the file. Click Tools. Select Edit PDF. Choose More. Click Bates Numbering and Add. Select Output Options to customize the serial numbers. Click OK.
