[Music] im here with kirsten today who was an envirothon student not too many years ago and were going to demonstrate how to use the biltmore stick and the merit hexameter which allows us to measure the number of merchantable logs in a tree this is useful as foresters make prescriptions on far stands determining how much lumber is available in the stand so you know the value of the trees and the value that a harvest could produce one of the most challenging parts about the forestry measurements for envirothon students is that most of the tools require that youre a chain away from whatever youre measuring a chain is 66 feet its a common forestry measurement so the tools are set up to be used at 66 feet but if youre at 60 feet when youre using the tool youre going to get a false reading its going to show more logs there than are actually in the tree on the other hand if youre back at 70 or 75 feet its going to show fewer logs as part of the test you have to do that yourself s

Read the right side of the log scale ruler at the highest point at which the trunk is approximately 6 to 10 inches in diameter. The numbered lines represent full logs, 16 feet long, while the dashes without numbers between the numerals represent 8-feet-long half logs.
Use the Log Scale Stick Doyle Rule with the Diameter of Log (inches) to estimate the volume of board feet in logs. Example: A log with an average diameter of 15 inches on the small end (inside bark), and a shortest length of 146 would have an estimated volume of 106 board feet (Doyle Rule).
If you have to hold the wood with two hands its a log. If you can do it with one its a stick.
Read the scale stick directly from the end of the log, not obliquely from the side. The diameter of a log is always measured inside the bark. This measurement is called diameter inside of bark or d.i.b. Use a log scale stick to measure the d.i.b. at the small end of the log.

The Doyle Rule (Table 1) is the most widely used rule, especially on private timber in the east and south. The formula is simple and easy to remember. This formula says to subtract four inches from the diameter for slabs and edgings, square the result, and adjust for log length.
The Doyle Rule math formula for calculating board footage, where the diameter is D and log length is L, is as follows: Subtract 4 from the determined diameter in inches, square of the answer and multiply this answer by the length (((D-4)/4)2) x L).
A log is generally a lot thicker than a stick. The diameter of a stick would be no more than a couple of inches (about 5 cm.). The diameter of a log would be several inches.
The board foot is the most common standard used for saw logs and lumber. A board foot contains 144 cubic inches of sawed lumber or the equivalent of a board 1 inch thick, 12 inches wide and 1 foot long. A second unit of measure is the cord.
