Greenstick gear consists of a 35- to 45-foot fiberglass pole that tows a 500- to 800-foot main line. The original poles were green in color, hence the name. Up to 10 artificial squid lures are individually attached to this main line and skipped across the surface of the water to attract yellowfin tuna.
The green stick is used to elevated and tow a 20-30# wooden bird up to 400 yards behind the vessel. The bird serves two purposes; (1) keep the main line taut (a key component to the action of the lures), and (2) act as a teaser to attract fish to the surface.
Greensticks suspend a mainline that is kept taut by a specially designed wood bird on the end. From the mainline, 4-8 baits are suspended from leaders or branch- lines just above the water surface. When fished, the baits dance in and out of the water in a dipping motion.
Tipping 20% of the trip price is standard on large boats and tips will be split between the three crewmembers as they see fit. Tipping individually is a great way to show appreciation but on some boats, its customary to tip 20% with 10% going to the captain and 5% to each deckhand.
Captains of charter boat fishing reported that they usually receive tips of 10-20% of the trips cost. A 15% tip is generally expected. The tip for a full-day trip is $600. The tip is split among the captain and the mate on most boats.
The green stick works like a 40-foot, vertical outrigger that elevates the main line to dangle lures over the water. The fiberglass and carbon-fiber pole bends like a giant fishing rod. At the tip of the pole, a tether is attached to the main line with a 200-pound-test breakaway.
These days, it is generally accepted that an appropriate tip is approximately 20% of your trip cost. For a full-day float (whether one or two anglers are in the boat), that typically works out to around $100.
