Age-standardized mortality rates adjust for differences in the age distribution of the population by applying the observed age-specific mortality rates for each population to a standard population.
Standardization is a technique used in comparing indicators from two or more populations. The goal of the standardization procedure is to control for compositional differences between these groups that may influence the indicator that is being examined.
Direct and indirect methods of standardization address confounding when comparing the rate of a given outcome (like mortality) between two populations that differ for important prognostic factors (like age, gender and social-economical status). These two methods are used for both descriptive and analytical purposes.
Adjustment is accomplished by first multiplying the age-specific rates of disease by age-specific weights. The weights used in the age-adjustment of cancer data are the proportion of the 1970 US population within each age group. The weighted rates are then summed across the age groups to give the age-adjusted rate.
That is, for each age group, ASDR = deaths in age group estimated population of that age group 100,000. This is called the direct method of standardization.
Traditionally, there are two methods of standardisation: direct and indirect standardisation. In direct standardisation (chapter 2), for each population, the distribution of the distorting characteristics in the standard population is used.
In epidemiology and demography, age adjustment, also called age standardization, is a technique used to allow statistical populations to be compared when the age profiles of the populations are quite different.
Procedure for direct standardization Multiply the age-specific mortality rates of the other population under study to the number of persons in each age group of the standard population. By this way, you will get the expected deaths for each age group of each population.
There are two major standardization methods: one is used when the standard is the structure of a population (direct method) and the other when the standard is a set of specific event rates (indirect method).
Age-standardisation is a technique used to enhance the comparability of event rates from different populations or different sub-populations over time by making adjustments for the confounding effects of differences in age structure between the populations being compared.
