Traditionally, there are two methods of standardisation: direct and indirect standardisation. In direct standardisation (chapter 2), for each population, the distribution of the distorting characteristics in the standard population is used.
Definition: The age-standardized mortality rate is a weighted average of the age-specific mortality rates per 100 000 persons, where the weights are the proportions of persons in the corresponding age groups of the WHO standard population.
Direct age-adjustment (or age standardization) is the same as calculating a weighted average. It weights the age-specific rates observed in a population of interest by the proportion of each age group in a standard population (Lilienfeld Stolley, 1994).
Used to compare risks for two or more populations at one point in time or for one population at two or more points in time. Age-adjusted rates are computed using the direct method by applying age-specific rates in a population of interest to a standardized age distribution.
The National Center for Health Statistics recommends that the U.S. 2000 standard population be used when calculating age-adjusted rates. However, if you compare rates from different sources, it is very important that you use the same standard population on both sides of your comparison.
In practice, age is the factor that is most frequently adjusted for. Age-standardization is particularly used in comparative mortality studies, since the age structure has an important impact on a populations overall mortality.
What is age-adjustment? Age-adjustment is a statistical process applied to rates of disease, death, injuries or other health outcomes which allows communities with different age structures to be compared.
calculatIng age-standardIzed rates The age-standardized incidence rate is the summary rate that would have been observed, given the schedule of age-specific rates, in a population with the age composition of some reference population, often called the standard population.
Standardised rates are generally multiplied by 1,000 or 100,000 to avoid small decimal fractions. They are then called standardised rates per 1,000 or 100,000 population. The standard population used to calculate SMRs can be any population to which the comparison population is being compared.
To calculate the age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR), we must first calculate the age-specific (mortality) rates for each age group by dividing the number of deaths by the respective population, and then multiplying the resulting number by 100,000: Age-specific rate, 0 to 39 years.
