How often should racking be inspected across your facility? The Health and Safety Executive recommends that a thorough racking inspection occur at least once every 12 months. However, a PRRS should visually check the racking each week, and the inspection result should be logged.
In addition to racking PSRs, racking is required to be inspected regularly by competent personnel. The CSA A344-17 guide calls for monthly internal inspections and yearly expert inspections. Doing this keeps racking structures free from structural defects and promotes proper health and safety procedures.
How often do I need one? A pallet racking inspection must be performed once every 12 months. At the completion of each inspection, you will be given an Annual Pallet Racking Inspection plaque to ascertain that your warehouse is up to standards and it will state the date of the next inspection.
Set and enforce adequate handling clearances between pallet loads and the racking frame around them. SEMA specifies a minimum clearance of 75mm between the top of the load and the beam above and on each side. These are absolute minima and the more clearance you can allow, the safer your operation.
Regularly inspecting your racking not only ensures you stay legally compliant, but also ensures any safety risks are picked up pronto. Identifying (and rectifying) damage as it happens means you reduce the risk of racking collapse, damage to your property, and serious injury to your staff.
If your warehouse has a high chance of racking damage, it should be inspected every month. Warehouses with a medium chance of racking damage should be inspected quarterly, and warehouses with a low chance of damage should be inspected bi-annually.
There are only two applicable rules: 1910.176(b), which effectively states that material stored in tiers must be made safe, and 1910.159, which covers fire sprinklers and essentially requires 18 inches of clearance between the rack and the sprinkler.
The National Fire Prevention Agency provides the following guideline for idle pallets: Stacks should not exceed 15 high or be greater than 400 sq. ft. However, the most definitive direction you may find for pallet stacking will likely come from your insurance carrier and their concern for potential fire hazard.
