okay so this video is going to talk about measures of spread but before we do that were going to look at the five key statistics that we can use to summarize data the first youre already familiar with that is the median or the middle number and thats the middle number when weve got a set of ordered data so if you look at the 15 pieces of data weve got here were starting at 18 going up to 53 um theyre already in order for us so our the first part of our job is done so the middle number if weve got 15 pieces of data is going to be the eighth piece of data so if i count um into the eighth piece ill get the middle number which is 26 so the median here is 26. uh now that median splits our data into two halves basically so what it means is that 50 of my data is uh less than 26 so 50 of the numbers are less than 26 in value and 50 of the numbers are more than 26 in value what the lower and upper quartile do is they further split your data into quarters okay so the media splits your

The standard deviation provides a measure of the overall variation in a data set. The standard deviation is always positive or zero. The standard deviation is small when the data are all concentrated close to the mean, exhibiting little variation or spread.
The standard deviation is a number which measures how far the data are spread from the mean. Let a calculator or computer do the arithmetic. The standard deviation, s or , is either zero or larger than zero.
Dispersion, or spread of data, is measured in terms of how far the data differs from the mean. In other words, if mean is the centre of the data, if we get an idea about how far the individual data points deviate from the mean, we would have an idea about the spread.
Similar to how we can interpret range and IQR values, smaller standard deviations indicate that the data is clustered around the mean. Larger standard deviation values indicate that the data is more spread out and can be found farther from the mean.
Definition. Measures of spread describe how similar or varied the set of observed values are for a particular variable (data item). Measures of spread include the range, quartiles and the interquartile range, variance and standard deviation.
