Put simply, back tension refers to using your back muscles to hold a bow at full draw while you aim and release. Back tension is the contraction of several muscles in the back, the most important of which are the rhomboid muscles between the scapulas (shoulder blades).
There are many versions of archery release aids, but the four most common types are: wrist strap index finger release, handheld thumb trigger release, handheld hinge release and the handheld resistance/tension type release.

A back tension style release completely removes the ability for an anticipated shot by removing ultimate control from the shooter. There is no trigger to punch or button to push.

Back tension is the wrong term for a release, thats a way of shooting any release. A thumb trigger is a trigger release fired with your thumb - same concept as a wrist strap index trigger. It is not the same as a tension release or hinge.
The head of a back tension release is on a hinge and pin that hooks to the string loop of a compound bow. As the release is rotated the hinge moves along a cam until the head releases and the shot breaks. Properly executed the shot will be a surprise which prevents any shot anticipation.
