Splitting rent by finding friends on Craigslist or even moving back in with mom and dad are popular tactics these days, largely due to rapidly rising housing costs. Most of the time, renting a two-bedroom and cutting the total fees two ways is cheaper than renting a one-bedroom on a single salary.
If you plan on splitting rent based on room size, heres how you do the math: Add the square footage of all the private spaces in the apartment, including bedroom, bathroom, balcony, closets, etc. Divide each persons individual space by this number. Multiply the total rent by each roommates percentage.
Each person residing in a bedroom will need to cover the rent for that space. For example, lets consider an apartment with four bedrooms and four individual renters occupying a separate room each. If the rent for your unit is $4,000 a month, each renter would be responsible for paying $1,000 in rent each month.
Divide the square meterage To get an accurate breakdown, take the square meterage of each bedroom and divide by the total square meterage of the property. This gives you the percentage of space that each room occupies. Then take each individual percentage and apply it to the total cost of rent.
Generally, the threshold is that if there is a noticeable difference in size to the naked eye, it is typically expected and fair for one roommate to pay about 2 to 7 percent more, depending on the size difference.
A good rule of thumb is to not pay more than 30% of your monthly income towards rent. If you divide the rent in half, and the number is more than 30% of one partners monthly salary, then this method might be a good choice for you to split expenses fairly.
Split Rent 50/50 The obvious way to split rent is for each partner to pay exactly half of the bill each month. This can keep it simple, with each person having an even share in housing costs. For example, if you find an apartment that costs $1,800 per month, each partner would contribute $900.
