The split environment provided by AMS-LaTeX is used to split a long equation over multiple lines, similar to the multline environment. Unlike multline , however, split allows for alignment using , and must be used inside another math environment such as equation. It does not add an equation number on its own.
Displaying long equations Insert a double backslash to set a point for the equation to be broken. The first part will be aligned to the left and the second part will be displayed in the next line and aligned to the right.
In general, the command \\ signifies a line break and within the correct math mode environment, it can start a new equation line.
To break an existing equation into parts: Right-click at the point where you want to break the equation and choose Insert Manual Break. Press Tab to align the equations.
Multiple Equations In general, the command \\ signifies a line break and within the correct math mode environment, it can start a new equation line.
Put the equation, all of it into the right box of the eqn array (there are two of them) At the point that you want to break the equation, press CTRL+Enter. This splits your equation into two lines.
To insert math use the menu InsertMathInline Formula (shortcut Ctrl+m). This inserts a small blue box which will contain the formula. Note that the math toolbar pops up automatically if the cursor is in a math box. (Note also the footnote which was inserted using the menu InsertFootnote.)
For equations longer than a line use the multline environment. Insert a double backslash to set a point for the equation to be broken. The first part will be aligned to the left and the second part will be displayed in the next line and aligned to the right.
