GIS Eligibility Based on Income single persons with total income less than $20,784. married/common-law couple, both OAS pensioners, with combined total income less than $27,456. OAS pensioners whose spouse/common-law partner is not receiving OAS, with combined annual income less than $49,824.
You can also earn up to $5,000 and still receive the full benefit amount if youre employed or self-employed. When earnings fall between $5,000 and $15,000, your GIS payment will be reduced by 50 cents for every dollar of income you make.
The GIS benefit is based on your annual income, or the combined annual income of you and your spouse or common-law partner. A change in income could therefore result in a change in benefit.
What is considered as income for GIS purposes? For the most part, income for GIS purposes is the same as your net income reported on your Income Tax return (excluding OAS).
Changes to GIS clawbacks. Currently, GIS recipients can earn up to $3500 of employment income without affecting their GIS pension. However, if they earn more, the GIS is reduced by 50% of the excess earnings.
Your monthly payment amount wont decrease if the cost of living falls. For the January to March 2023 time period: If youre single, widowed or divorced, and your individual income is below $20,832, youd receive the maximum monthly payment of $1,026.96.
Individuals who are age 55 or older are eligible to split pension income with their spouses.
To be eligible, the person must have received a federal GIS or a federal OAS allowance for the preceding year. A single benefit is paid per couple. However, if the spouses live apart (e.g. if one of them is in a nursing home), both are eligible for the benefit.
