Hi this is Gary with MacMost.com. Today lets take a look at Sorting in Numbers. Ive imported some data into a Numbers spreadsheet. These are US cities with the State, population, and area. Everything here from the initial list is sorted by city. Its just alphabetical and it is great if you want to be able to look up some information. But what would be more useful is if we sorted by population. The way to do that is first lets select a cell inside of a table. Then we have the column headings here. When I click on them I get some commands. I can Sort Ascending. Im going to do it by column C which is population. Im going to sort by ascending which gives me a population starting with the smallest going to the largest. These are the one hundred largest cities in America so it makes more sense to actually sort the other way, descending, so I can see the largest city, next largest city, etc going down. Now I can do the same thing by area. If I wanted to resort everything by area I can

All dates and observations must be sorted in ascending chronological order (i.e. oldest in the uppermost row and most recent at the bottom).
Descending order means the largest or last in the order will appear at the top of the list: For numbers or amounts, the sort is largest to smallest.
In mathematics and computer science, the sorting numbers are a sequence of numbers introduced in 1950 by Hugo Steinhaus for the analysis of comparison sort algorithms. These numbers give the worst-case number of comparisons used by both binary insertion sort and merge sort.
Create a sorting rule Select a table to sort, or select just specific rows in a column to sort. Tap. , tap the Sort tab, then tap Entire Table or Selected Rows. Tap Add a Column, then tap a column to sort by. To add more rules, tap Add a Column. To reorder the rules, tap Edit above the list of rules, then drag. Tap Done.
Numbers are said to be in descending order when they are arranged from the largest to the smallest number. E.g. 25, 21, 17, 13 and 9 are arranged in descending order.
When it comes to dates, ascending order would mean that the oldest ones come first and the most recent ones last.
In Excel, there are two ways to sort numbers. In first, select the data and then click on the Sort option from the Data menu tab. Choose the column whose value we want to sort, then choose Sort on Value from the drop-down. Now we can Sort the number by Largest to Smallest and vice-versa.
A standard order is often called ascending (corresponding to the fact that the standard order of numbers is ascending, i.e. A to Z, 0 to 9), the reverse order descending (Z to A, 9 to 0). For dates and times, ascending means that earlier values precede later ones e.g. 1/1/2000 will sort ahead of 1/1/2001.
