Hi. This is Marty from Blue Lightning TV. Im going to show you how to create a cool-looking, dot mosaic portrait from a photo and how you can quickly replace it with different photo without having to redo all the effects. This is an update of a tutorial I did quite awhile ago on an earlier version of Photoshop. Open a photo youd like to use for this project. I downloaded this one from Dreamstime.com. The first step is to convert it into a Smart Object, so we can modify it non-destructively and to allow us to replace it with a different photo without having to re-do all the effects. To do this, click the icon at the upper, right corner of the Layers panel and click Convert to Smart Object. A popular method of drawing, engraving or painting, stippling uses dots or repeated short strokes to create an image.
Stippling is the use of numerous, individual dots to create the impression of an object or its texture. Stippling reduces negative space, which can make that surface appear more shadowy, more textured, or closer to the viewer.
Beginning ink artists usually choose stippling as a starting point technique because its forgiving a couple of odd dots probably wont ruin the artwork. Its also relatively easy to control the accuracy of dots (and the drawing in general) probably easier than dealing with a variety of hatches.
