To remove selected parts of lines from each FILE, we use the cut command in the Linux system. The cut command is used to remove and print the selected section of each FILE in the Linux operating system using a terminal. It is also used to cut the selected parts of a line by byte position, character, and field.
Using the head and tail Commands Lets say we want to read line X. The idea is: First, we get line 1 to X using the head command: head -n X input. Then, we pipe the result from the first step to the tail command to get the last line: head -n X input | tail -1.
Using the sed Command Removing the first line from an input file using the sed command is pretty straightforward. The sed command in the example above isnt hard to understand. The parameter 1d tells the sed command to apply the d (delete) action on line number 1.
The CUT command is a command-line tool for cutting data from each line of files and writing the result to standard output. It can be used to cut parts of a line by byte position, character, and delimiter.
The following command line options are used by the cut command to make it more specific: -b, --bytes=LIST: It is used to cut a specific section by bytes. -c, --characters=LIST: It is used to select the specified characters. -d, --delimiter=DELIM: It is used to cut a specific section by a delimiter.
The tail command is a Linux utility that is used to display the last few lines of a text file. It can also be used to remove the first line of a text file by using the + option. The + option is used to specify the number of lines that should be displayed. By specifying 2, we can remove the first line of a text file.
cut Command Options Select using a specified field, a field set, or a field range. Select using a specified byte, a byte set, or a byte range. Select using a specified character, a character set, or a character range. Used to specify a delimiter to use instead of the default TAB delimiter.
