Hello, everyone! Today, I want to show you this. Its called a slide rule, and Im going to show you how to use this to perform calculations-- so: multiplication, division, squaring a number, and so on. Its what they used to use before pocket calculators. So people like mathematicians, engineers, physicists-- you know-- cool people! Im going to show you how to use this, and then, finally, I will show you why this worked. They were big in the fifties! But, then again, so were rickets! So when you first see one of these, they look a bit baffling. They look a little bit like a ruler, except this bit here, in the middle, slides across. So, hey! Its not just a clever name. If you look closer, youll notice that the scales arent uniform. So here, theres a large gap between the numbers 1 and 2, but theres only a small gap between the numbers 8 and 9. But how do I use this to multiply? So, luckily, we can ignore most of the scales here on the slide rule. The only ones we need to use are

The dot product of two vectors is given by the formula a. b=|a||b|cos() a . b = | a | | b | cos ⁡ The dot product of two vectors is a scalar and lies in the plane of the two vectors.
Dot products are used to calculate scalar quantities like mechanical work, which is the dot product of a force and displacement. To know how much work a force does on an object, multiply the displacement by the component of the force that is parallel to the displacement. Thats a dot product!
Example 1. Calculate the dot product of a=(1,2,3) and b=(4,5,6). Do the vectors form an acute angle, right angle, or obtuse angle? we calculate the dot product to be ab=1(4)+2(5)+3(6)=410+18=12.
First find the magnitude of the two vectors a and b, i.e., |a| | a | and |b| | b | . Secondly, find the cosine of the angle between the two vectors. Finally take a product of the magnitude of the two vectors and the and cosine of the angle between the two vectors, to obtain the dot product of the two vectors.
Since the standard unit vectors are orthogonal, we immediately conclude that the dot product between a pair of distinct standard unit vectors is zero: ij=ik=jk=0.
Dot Product of Vectors The scalar product of two vectors a and b of magnitude |a| and |b| is given as |a||b| cos , where represents the angle between the vectors a and b taken in the direction of the vectors.
