We click into text, at the position where we want to insert the reference to the footnote. Then we go to the References tab and click on Insert Footnotes. As we can see, Word will automatically insert a line at the end of the page and also the number 1 since it is our first footnote. Here we can now write our referencing text. When we go back to the content, we can see that the referencing number is also inserted where we first placed our cursor. Of course, we can insert more footnotes on a single page. Word will simply make room for them at the end of the page. Inserting an endnote works the same way. We again click into the text, where we want the reference to the endnote to be inserted. The footnote indicator in the text should be replaced with two superscripted asterisks followed by a space. The dagger for the footnote at the bottom of the page should be replaced with two asterisks in regular font followed by a space.
The footnote contains the number of the citation followed by a period and then the citation itself. The citation always includes the authors name and the title of the text, and it always ends with a period. Full notes also include all the relevant publication information in parentheses (which varies by source type).
Choice of a marker: Commonly used markers for footnotes are the asterisk or the star (*), the obelisk or the dagger (), the section sign (), and the paragraph sign or the blind P or the pilcrow (). If additional markers are needed, the same marks are doubled (**, , , ).

Center the word Footnotes at the top of the page. Indent five spaces on the first line of each footnote. Then, follow normal paragraph spacing rules. Double-space throughout.

Change your footnote formatting. Click the Menu button in the bottom right-corner of the Footnotes section to open it. Click Symbol to choose a symbol from the Symbol menu. You can choose any character from any font, though the Symbols font will open by default.
