Hello! Im Rob Myers, a Senior Project Manager with United Structural Systems. Today I would like to discuss two types of settlement that can occur with your home. The first type of settlement is commonly referred to as normal settlement. Almost every structure will experience normal settlement after construction. With this type, the structure settles at a normal or uniform rate. The structure remains level with no cracks in the drywall or brick veneer. The second type of settlement is referred to as differential. Differential settlement can occur at any time during the life of the structure. This settlement occurs when a portion of the structure settles at a different rate. Differential settlement can cause foundation failure. Cracks in the brick veneer or foundation walls are the most common signs of differential settlement. If you have noticed cracked brick or cracks in your foundation walls of your home, please contact USS for a free evaluation and estimate. We guarantee our Best

The four basic types of foundations full basement, submerged crawl space, flush crawl space, and slab-on-gradeare shown in Figure 1-4. Of course, actual houses may include combinations of these types.
The Different Types Of Foundations Shallow Foundations. Made in depths as little as 3ft, shallow footings are also called spread or open footings. Individual Footings. Combined Footings. Strip Footings. Raft or Mat Foundations. Deep Foundations. Pile Foundations.
While quite a few foundation types exist, there are four that are considered the most common. They are the basement, crawl space, pier and beam piling and slab.
Poured concrete is the strongest type of foundation for a house. Concrete is incredibly strong and durable, and it can be poured into any shape. This makes it ideal for supporting the weight of a house. Block foundations are also very strong, but they are not as flexible as poured concrete.
The settlements of footings in sand are often estimated based on the results of in situ tests, particularly the standard penetration test (SPT) and the cone penetration test (CPT).
There are three main foundation types: full basement, crawl space and concrete slab.
Footings design is specific for each respective building site, depending upon the structural plan and the orientation of the columns in superstructure. It can be designed and oriented in various shapes e.g. circular, square, rectangle etc. Different types of footing having its own merits and de-merits.
Generally the settlements of shallow foundations such as pad or strip footings are limited to 25 mm (Terzaghi, 1996). Recent studies on (especially small scale) shallow foundations have shown that allowable bearing capacity occur at settlement of between 5 to 10 % of foundation width.
