Nearly 80% of all US currency in circulation is denominated in $100 bills.
If it is damaged but not mutilated and you do not want to use that currency for any reason, you can exchange that money at your local bank. Money that has been mutilated or extensively damaged beyond repair or use should be submitted to the US Bureau of Engraving and Printing or the US Mint.
The Secretary of the Treasury and the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) redesign U.S. currency every 7 to 10 years for aesthetics and, more importantly, to deter counterfeiting and enhance security.
The current design $100 note is the latest denomination of U.S. currency to be redesigned, and it was issued on October 8, 2013. The current design $100 note features additional security features including a 3-D Security Ribbon and color-shifting Bell in the Inkwell.
How to Redeem Mutilated Currency Mail or personally deliver your mutilated note to the BEP. For reimbursement, provide a bank account and a routing number for a U.S. bank, or payee and mailing address information (to be paid by check). Each case is carefully examined by a mutilated currency examiner.
The new note designs will be made public six to eight months ahead of their release. The first of these redesigns are set to release in 2026 with the $10. Following the $10 will be the $50 in 2028, $20 in 2030, $5 in 2032, and finally the $100 in 2034.
Money Replacement Handle burned money as little as possible. Attempt to encase each bill or portion of a bill in plastic wrap for preservation. If money is only half burned or less (if half or more of the bill is intact), you can take the remainder to your local federal reserve bank for replacement.
The Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) redeems mutilated currency as a free public service. Please find more information about this service at BEP Currency Redemption Services.
If you have damaged or mutilated currency, or need currency replaced, contact the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. If you have currency you suspect is counterfeit, contact your local Secret Service Field Office. For questions about coins, please contact the U.S. Mint.
Under regulations issued by the Department of the Treasury, mutilated United States currency may be exchanged at face value if: More than 50% of a note identifiable as United States currency is present.
