we are going to start talking more in color terms starting with tint tone and shade you may have heard these in passing such as lets use a shade of red for this area but theres a good chance that the term shade was being used incorrectly so lets get these color terms down looking back at our modern color wheel these are the pure hues that we work with so let me show you an example of how to create a tint a tone in a shade from a single hue so Im going to pull up red as our example and Im going to split it into three sections and from here were going to mix in white neutral gray and black and then this will result in a tint a tone in a shade of red to remember which is which I typically think that tint and white are similar sounding like a hint of white just like a shade and black are similar in that they both have five letters in the letter a is in the middle and four tone I always think of toning it down and in that way it lessens it now these three are just examples of a tint

Hue: A pure pigment. Tone: A pure pigment with just grey added. Tint: A pure pigment with just white added. Shade: a pure pigment with just black added.
SHADE: a shade is created when black is added to a pure hue or color. These colors are darker than the original color and often have a more intense, richer quality to them. TONE: a tone is created when gray is added to a pure hue or color.
In color theory, a tint is a mixture of a color with white, which increases lightness, while a shade is a mixture with black, which increases darkness. Both processes affect the resulting color mixtures relative saturation. A tone is produced either by mixing a color with gray, or by both tinting and shading.
Tone is a hue or mixture of pure colors to which only pure gray is added (equal amounts of black and white). Adding gray to a color will make the intensity much duller. Beware of mixing too much gray into a hue as it can become over-dulled and virtually impossible to restore the brilliance.
There are examples of tints and shades in works of art, such as paintings and drawings. In a drawing, tints can create a light or ethereal feeling. Shades can be used to add depth and drama. Tints and shades can also be used in graphic design.
Colors can be broken down into three basic typesprimary, secondary and tertiary colors.
Art Color Paint Terms Definitions: Hue, Tint, Shade, Tone Hues: Hues describe a pure color that is found on the color wheel and has had nothing added to it to change its properties. Tints: What is a tint in art? Tones: Tones are created when grey is added to a color.

Shade is a hue or mixture of pure colors to which only black is added. It contains no white or gray. Shade darkens the color, but the hue remains the same. When mixing a shade, begin with the color itself then add black one drop at a time.
And many do consider black to be a color, because you combine other pigments to create it on paper. But in a technical sense, black and white are not colors, theyre shades. They augment colors.
