Lens vignetting refers to the gradual reduction of an images brightness or saturation from the image center to the four corners/edges. Also known as lens shading, light fall-off or luminance shading, it depends on the lens aperture and several lens design parameters. This fall-off is measured in f-stops.
Shading correction can adjust image inconsistency, generally seen on the edges, due to illumination and background inhomogeneity. This is achieved by subtracting data from a blank image from the current image.
Uneven illumination correction incorporates a penalty term that performs intensity distribution, and transfer between pre-defined uniformly illuminated and non-uniformly illuminated sub-regions of the input scale image. Many methods exist in the literature to address illumination correction.
Image Geometry Correction (often referred to as Image Warping) is the process of digitally manipulating image data such that the images projection precisely matches a specific projection surface or shape.
Shading correction (or flat field compensation) is used to compensate for lens vignetting as well as for inhomogeneity in the illumination. Shading correction is achieved by performing a white balance calibration during illumination of a homogeneous white target.
Press slightly harder with your pencil to make darker values on the opposite side of your light source. Build up layers of shading, working towards the darkest part of the drawing. Your darkest shadow is called the core shadow. Rounded shapes will have reflected shadows on the opposite side of the light source.
Illumination correction is based on background subtraction. This type of correction assumes the scene is composed of an homogeneous background and relatively small objects brighter or darker than the background.
Shading describes a decrease in image brightness from the center to the corners or a variation of color over the imaging field that often occurs in cameras with a small sensor. Shading, therefore, influences image quality by creating unwanted dark or shaded edges.
