Summary. Trace Precedents is an inbuilt feature in Microsoft Excel. The tool helps audit a formula in order to understand the relationship between the active cell and other cells. To access trace precedents, go to Formulas Tab > Formulas Auditing > Trace Precedents.
The Trace Error button appears next to the cell in which a formula error occurs, and a green triangle appears in the upper-left corner of the cell.
Go to Formulas tab > Formulas Auditing > Trace Dependents. Click on the Trace Dependents button to see the cells that are affected by the active cell. It will show a blue arrow that links the active cell and the other cells related to the selected cell.
Trace cells that provide data to a formula (precedents) Select the cell that contains the formula for which you want to find precedent cells. To display a tracer arrow to each cell that directly provides data to the active cell, on the Formulas tab, in the Formula Auditing group, click Trace Precedents .
We'd like to confirm if the Trace Precedents and Trace Dependents options are grayed out. If so, click File> Options > Advanced, under the sections Display options for this workbook, select All under For objects, show to make these functions activated.
Resolution Select the cell to which the arrow is pointing. On the Formulas tab, click Remove All Arrows in Formula Auditing group, and then click Remove Precedent Arrows.
To use Trace Error in Excel, select the formula cell with the error displayed in it. Click the “Trace Error” drop-down button in the “Formula Auditing” button group on the “Formulas” tab in the Ribbon. Then select the “Trace Error” command in the drop-down menu to draw arrows to the cells causing the error.
Select the worksheet you want to check for errors. If the worksheet is manually calculated, press F9 to recalculate. If the Error Checking dialog is not displayed, then click on the Formulas tab > Formula Auditing > Error Checking button.
Open your workbook to a sheet that contains cells with precedents or dependents. Select the cell in which you want to check precedents and/or dependents. Click the Trace Precedents or Trace Dependents button in the Formula Auditing group of the Formulas tab.
Here are the steps to follow to trace cell dependents: Select the cell whose dependents you want to trace. Select Formulas > Trace Dependents. Excel adds a tracer arrow to each direct dependent. Keep repeating step 2 to see more levels of dependents.
