To create a numbered list: Select the text you want to format as a list. On the Home tab, click the drop-down arrow next to the Numbering command. A menu of numbering styles will appear. Move the mouse over the various numbering styles. The text will format as a numbered list.
As with most formatting features in Word, there is more than one way to insert page numbers into a document. Two reliable ways include using the Insert tab and double clicking in the header or footer, both of which are explained in this tutorial.
Use a numbered list to display complete sentences or paragraphs in a series (e.g., itemized conclusions, steps in a procedure). Use a lettered list or bulleted list rather than a numbered list if the items are phrases.
In the Customize Format dialog box, select the Numbers tab and in the Decimal symbol drop-down, select the separator you want to use.
On the Insert tab, click the Page Number icon, and then click Page Number. Select a location, and then pick an alignment style. Word automatically numbers every page, except designated title pages. To change the numbering style, select Format and then choose the formatting you want to use.
You can number headings so that top-level headings (Heading 1) are numbered 1, 2, 3, for example, and second-level headings (Heading 2) are numbered 1.1, 1.2, 1.3. Open your document that uses built-in heading styles, and select the first Heading 1. On the Home tab, in the Paragraph group, choose Multilevel List.
If you need subsections numbered (for example, 2.1, 2.2, 2.12, etc.) as well, then choose the list the 1 Heading 1; 1.1 Heading 2, etc. option (right side, middle row). Note that doing this once sets the formatting for all heading levels.
Define a new list style Select the text or numbered list you want to change. On the Home tab, in the Paragraph group, click the arrow next to Multilevel List. Specify a name for your new list style. Choose the number to start the list at. Choose a level in the list to apply your formatting.
To start a numbered list, type 1, a period (.), a space, and some text. Word will automatically start a numbered list for you. Type* and a space before your text, and Word will make a bulleted list. To complete your list, press Enter until the bullets or numbering switch off.
Number your headings Open your document that uses built-in heading styles, and select the first Heading 1. On the Home tab, in the Paragraph group, choose Multilevel List. Under List Library, choose the numbering style you would like to use in your document.
