If you were to print a copy of your document, and ask a friend to proofread it, theyd probably mark the errors in red pen, and write any suggestions they had in the margins. Wouldnt it be easier if you could do that electronically? In Word, you canusing two features called Track Changes and Comments. Im going to turn on track changes right now so I can show you what I mean. To do this, go to the Review tab then click the Track Changes command. Now any changes I make to the document will appear as markup, which is Words answer to the traditional red pen. For example, when I delete text, it doesnt go away it just gets crossed out. When I add more text, it gets underlined. This lets the owner of the document see what changes Ive made before making them part of the final draft. You can also add comments in the margins by selecting the text you want to comment on then clicking the New Comment command. Click the File tab to go to the Backstage area. In the left navigation panel, click the Info category. On the right side of the screen, click the Properties drop-down and choose Show Document Panel. There you have it, four simple clicks to open the Document Information Panel in Word (or Excel or PowerPoint).

You can use the Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications Variables collection to set and retrieve the contents of a string variable in a Word document or template. Also, you can use the DocVariable field to retrieve the value of a document variable after it has been set to display within a Word document.
To set up those custom fields, go into the Info menu in Word, and on the right side of the screen, click on the dropdown arrow next to Properties Advanced Properties. In this pop-up, you can add the recipient field by name. Select text as the type and the value. Click Add, and then OK.
