A stone column is one of the soil stabilizing methods that is used to increase strength, decrease the compressibility of soft and loose fine graded soils, accelerate a consolidation effect and reduce the liquefaction potential of soils. The columns consist of compacted gravel or crushed stone arranged by a vibrator.
A stone column is one of the soil stabilization methods that is used to increase strength, decrease the compressibility of soft and loose fine graded soils, accelerate a consolidation effect and reduce the liquefaction potential of soils.
Elastic settlement occurs in sandy, silty, and clayey soils. * Consolidation settlement occurs in cohesive soils due to the expulsion of the water from the voids. * Because of the soil permeability the rate of settlement may varied from soil to another.
Ground improvement is carried out for various objectives: to improve bearing capacity and reduce settlement of soft ground, prevent earthquake liquefaction, control groundwater, stabilize excavation bottom, prevent deformation of surrounding ground, or clean up contaminated ground.
Causes of differential settlements Soil of different lithological characteristics in the horizontal direction (different compressibility and soil compressibility beneath different parts of the foundation structure). Drying of soil surface layers. The proximity of trees with large roots. Piping leaks, sewer drainage etc.
Types of settlement in soil There are three main types of settlement in geotechnical engineering: Uniform settlement. Differential settlement. Curvature settlement.
Main advantages of using stone column are, Increased strength to improve stability, reduced deformation due to distortion or compressibility of the soil mass, Reduced susceptibility to liquefaction, the reduced natural variability of soils, to make it more economical, Settlement reduction, to increase the load bearing
Ground Improvement techniques may include Soil Stabilisation, Vibro Stone Columns, Jet Grouting, Deep Soil Mixing, Dynamic Compaction.
