RAW + JPEG mode is available on some digital cameras, and lets you shoot and save in both file formats at the same time. This saves two copies — the original RAW file and a JPEG. This lets you preview and use a JPEG image immediately — but uses up more memory since you have two files for just one image.
Shooting in RAW and JPEG at the same time gives you greater flexibility. Photo by: 'Iurie Belegurschi'. Most digital cameras these days will allow for you to record the same image in both JPEG and RAW formats, at the same time. This gives you increased flexibility with your files.
Solution Set the camera's power switch to [ON]. Press the [MENU] button to display the menu. Press the [ ] button and select the [ ] tab. ... Turn the [ ] dial to select [RAW image processing], then press [ ]. Turn the [ ] dial to select the image you want to process, then press [ ]. ... Process the image. ... Save the image.
If you wish to make a quick edit or directly use the image for social media, go with JPEGs. If you wish to edit the same image seriously, use the RAW file. I hope next time you import an image to Lightroom, these experiments will encourage you to shoot and edit in RAW format.
If you want the maximum image quality, shoot at maximum resolution with low JPEG/HEIF compression (best quality, large files), or preferably in RAW format.
Most professional photography is shot in raw. This format gives the most flexibility when editing photos later. Professional photojournalists and sports photographers may shoot in JPEG when they send images directly from their camera to a news outlet. They do not have time to post-process the pictures.
The bottom line. RAWs give you more information to work with, but you have to put more time into that work. If speed is of the essence, or you want a point-and-shoot experience that yields photos ready to use out of the box, JPEGs might actually be a better option than RAWs.
