How to secure a PDF file using Word. Open the document you would like to password-protect. Click File. Select Info. Select Protect Document. From the dropdown menu, choose Encrypt with Password. Type a password, then click OK. Type the password again to confirm it, then click OK.
You can also click the three dots in the top right corner to open Settings. Toggle Always open PDF files externally off. Press the Windows Key + S and begin typing in default apps and click on default apps or better yet, Choose default apps by file types. Scroll down to Choose default apps by file type.

Click on the edge of the upper right corner of the three points, Settings - cookies and site permissions - PDF documents, check the always download PDF documents.
Click Choose File on the extensions menu, and find the PDF file you want to secure. After choosing the file, you will be prompted to select a password. Finally, press Protect File Now, and your PDF file will be securely protected with a password.
