Resolution refers to the number of pixels in an image. Resolution is sometimes identified by the width and height of the image as well as the total number of pixels in the image. For example, an image that is 2048 pixels wide and 1536 pixels high (2048 1536) contains 3,145,728 pixels (or 3.1 megapixels).
The standard resolution for web images is 72 PPI (often called screen resolution). At that size, the pixels you see on the screen are all the pixels there are; an image thats 4 long at 72 PPI will take up about 4 of your monitor.
An image with 2048x1536 resolution contains 3.1 Megapixels or 3,145,728 pixels. The more the number of pixels in an image, the higher the resolution will be.

Resolution is traditionally set in pixels per inch (ppi) also know as dots per inch (dpi). The resolution setting maps an images pixel dimensions to its physical size. With a pixel dimension of 600 x 600 and a resolution of 300 DPI, the image has a physical size of 2 x2.
Low Resolution Images Images used on the internet are typically 72 dpi. This is a suitable resolution for websites since it enables a small file size and does not look visibly pixelated on most computer screens. However, images at 72 dpi will ALWAYS look pixelated and low-resolution when printed.
In Photoshop, the quickest way to resize an image starts with: Viewing the top menu and clicking Image. Select Image Size from the drop-down menu. Make sure the box for Constrain Proportions is checked. Then, select 720 px, 960 px or 2048 px for your file width. Click Ok to confirm.
2048x2048 pixels is 4,194,304 pixels. Therefore, you can also express it as 4.19 or 4.2 megapixels. In contrast, a full 1080P HD video resolution is 1920x1080 pixels, which is effectively (only) 2 megapixels!
