It may be that you cant search your PDFs because they dont have any text in them. For example, if your PDF is a scanned document, its just a picture of a document. It doesnt have any actual text for Windows to index.
When a PDF is opened in the Acrobat Reader (not in a browser), the search window pane may or may not be displayed. To display the search/find window pane, use Ctrl+F.
