Drawing paper is a heavier, and better-quality paper than sketching paper. It is commonly used for sketching and finished work. The ideal mediums used with drawing paper are graphite, charcoal, dry monochromes, soft pastel, oil pastel, markers and pen and ink.
Printer Paper: Compared to drawing paper, printer paper is cheaper, lower weight, more acidic, has less tooth, cant handle wet media, doesnt take much dry media, cant handle wet media, and is generally crappy in every important respect.
Printer paper is a lesser grade than sketching paper, its lightweight, not meant for final drawings, but for studies and exercises or toss-aways. For those purposes its fine. But, keep in mind, printer paper is made from cellulose fibers from wood pulp, so it isnt intended for art.
For rough practice sketches, pretty much any paper will do. Office printer paper is cheap and smooth and doesnt bleed if you like to sketch in pen. Bulk newsprint pads are functional, if not robust, and useful for large preparatory sketches. Canson Biggie Sketch or Strathmore 200 series are good, economical choices.
Drawing paper is generally made out of wood cellulose, or cotton cellulose. Probably the most important distinction between the two is that wood cellulose comes from tree fiber, which contains a polymer called lignin.
In general, the biggest difference between sketch and drawing paper is that Sketch paper is intended for practicing, experimenting, and quick studies, while drawing paper is intended for finished artwork. Sketch paper is often lighter weight, while drawing paper is conversely a bit heavier in weight.
Yes, a normal white sheet of paper can also be used for sketching. Sketching is a part of art and craft and art can be done where ever you want. Toned Sketch is best for dry media only. Toned Mixed Media is best for artists who want to use watercolor pencils or add watercolor and other wet media to their piece.
Sketch books use cartridge paper or even watercolour paper. These are usually white but can come in toned, slightly coloured, paper and are also available with black, grey and brown cartridge paper. Cartridge paper is a high quality paper ideal for illustration and drawing.
