Cartridge Paper Best for Dry Media The paper most commonly associated with drawing is cartridge paper. It is so-called because it was used in the making of paper cartridges in the sixteenth century, holding the ammunition of gunpowder and bullets together for loading into hand-held firearms.
Newsprint paper is a perfect example: its made of wood cellulose containing lignin, and yellows very quickly. When lignin is removed from wood cellulose, however, it results in very durable paper (for example, Strathmore 400 Series Drawing Paper - my personal favorite).
(1) Newsprint Papers The Newsprint Paper Pads are most commonly used by sketching amateurs. In artists words, if we can say, newsprint paper pads are for sketchers who like to sketch their ideas on paper.
For graphite drawings with a moderate degree of realism, a drawing paper like Strathmore Series 400 is a good place to begin. It will give you good results without breaking the bank.
Drawing paper is a heavier, and better-quality paper than sketching paper. It is commonly used for sketching and finished work. The ideal mediums used with drawing paper are graphite, charcoal, dry monochromes, soft pastel, oil pastel, markers and pen and ink.
Compared to drawing pads, which are meant for final works of art, sketch pads are designed with practice works in mind. This means the paper tends to be thinner and wont be archivalbut the products are also more budget-friendly.
Strathmore drawing paper pads are a favorite among numerous artists because the brand has a variety of sizes that are suitable for drawing in various dry media. Plus, Strathmore offers the best price-to-quality ratio a key factor especially for beginners who want a lot of practice.
There are several different types of art paper surfaces including Hot Pressed/Satinata/Liscia, Cold Pressed/Not/Fina and Rough/Torchon/Grossa.
Sketches are usually smaller than drawings and may be done in a small sketchbook or notepad. Drawings are often created in a larger size to be displayed. We can also distinguish sketches from drawings based on the surface an artist has used.
Traditionally a vellum surface would be recommended for colored pencil work because it has a bit more texture and tooth than the smooth surface. The tooth of a vellum surface helps to grab the colored pencil as it is being laid down and allows the artist to achieve greater depth of tone.
