Ticks are smaller fractions of a point in futures price changes. Each tick is worth a certain fractional value, such as 0.10 or 0.25 points. Pips represent changes in the fourth decimal place in most forex currency pairs. Each of these measurements has a dollar value thats based on the exchange on which it is traded.
Tick Charts For example, one bar will print after every 144 transactions (trades that occur) on a 144-tick chart. These transactions include small orders as well as large block orders. Each transaction is counted just once, regardless of the size. More bars will print in periods of high market activity.
The tick size is the smallest possible price change that a futures contract can experience, and the tick value is the dollar value of that price change. 1 It is set by the exchange, and it varies according to the futures contract youre trading.

If the current price of WTI futures is $54, the current value of the contract is determined by multiplying the current price of a barrel of oil by the size of the contract. In this example, the current value would be $54 x 1000 = $54,000.
Tick size is the minimum price increment change of a trading instrument. Tick sizes were once quoted in fractions (e.g., 1/16th of $1), but today are predominantly based on decimals and expressed in cents. For most stocks, the tick size is $0.01, but fractions of a cent may also occur.
What Is a Tick? A tick is a measure of the minimum upward or downward movement in the price of a security. A tick can also refer to the change in the price of a security from one trade to the next trade. Since 2001 and the advent of decimalization, the minimum tick size for stocks trading above $1 is one cent. 1.
The Tick Index indicator shows the number of stocks trading on an uptick minus the number of stocks trading on a downtick. The TRIN (Traders Index) indicator is a technical analysis indicator calculated by dividing the advances-to-declines spread by the volume of advances to declines.
For stocks, tick sizes are fairly straightforwardbasically, its dollars and cents times the number of shares.
The value of one contract is calculated by multiplying the current level of the index by $5. So if the index moves 30 points, or 1%, that translates into a gain or loss of $150 (30 points/0.25 minimum tick = 120 ticks; 120 x $1.25 = $150).
