King Edward I, born in June 1239 at the Palace of Westminster, was the son of King Henry III and Eleanor of Provence. Henry, who just began to exercise authority in his early thirties, named his son after Saint Edward the Confessor. Edward had four siblings - Edmund, Margaret, Beatrice, and Katheri. Henry and Eleanor's marriage was happy, a rarity in royal weddings arranged for political reasons.
