There is no iCloud backup for a Mac. The iCloud Drive folder contents sync if you turn on iCloud Drive. You can also select Desktop Documents in the iCloud Drive settings to sync contents in those locations.
Apples macOS will automatically save files saved to your Desktop and Documents folders to iCloud, making these files available across all your devices. Thats useful but will eat into your online drive capacity, particularly as (at 5GB) Apple still doesnt provide sufficient free drive space.
Store your photos and videos in iCloud Tap Settings [your name] iCloud Photos. Tap Sync this iPhone. In iOS 15 or earlier, tap to turn on iCloud Photos. Select Optimize iPhone Storage to save space on your device.
Upload files Drag files from the desktop or a folder window on your computer to the iCloud Drive window or a folder icon in the iCloud Drive window. If you drag to a folder icon, it becomes highlighted to confirm that the item youre dragging will go into the folder.
Macs do not backup to iCloud.
The Save to iCloud Drive option is available only on Mac platform. In order to save files to iCloud Drive, go to the File Save As click the Other locations dropdown and select iCloud Drive. Type the name of the file and press Save.
Apple offers iCloud Backup for iPhones and iPads but not for Mac computers. It is possible to sync data from a Mac to iCloud if you turn on those options (e.g., iCloud Photos, iCloud Drive including the Desktop Documents option).
The Mac does not automatically back up data to iCloud. It stores shared information to iCloud and, in turn, makes that information available to other Apple devices. The Mac does automatically back up to Time Machine if Time Machine is turned on. That backup is not available to other Apple devices.
