In the TextEdit app on your Mac, choose File Open. Select the document, then click Open. If your document is stored in iCloud Drive, you can select TextEdit in the iCloud section of the sidebar, then double-click your document.
For general-purpose work, its easiest to use one of the text editors included with macOS. If you want to use a graphical text editor, use TextEdit (in Launchpad). Otherwise, use one of the command-line editors included with macOS: Nano nano is a simple command-line editor.
Open documents in TextEdit on Mac In the TextEdit app on your Mac, choose File Open. Select the document, then click Open. If your document is stored in iCloud Drive, you can select TextEdit in the iCloud section of the sidebar, then double-click your document. See Use iCloud Drive to store documents.
Create text replacements On your Mac, choose Apple menu System Settings, then click Keyboard in the sidebar. Click Text Replacements on the right. Click the Add button in the dialog that appears, type the text to replace (such as teh) and its replacement (such as the), then click Add. Click Done.
In general, both . TXT and . TEXT files can be opened and edited using any plain text editor and can be easily exchanged between different operating systems and software applications.
How to Open and Edit a Text File on a Mac Navigate to your Applications folder and double-click TextEdit. Your TextEdit window opens. Press cmd+O. Navigate to the desired text file and double-click the filename to load it. Click the insertion cursor anywhere in the file and begin typing. Press Command+S.
Text editors for the Mac. You can edit plain text files using any text editor, including the Macs built-in TextEdit. Dont use a word processor like Microsoft Word because it will introduce hidden formatting codes that are not suitable for plain text files.
If you want to use a graphical text editor, use TextEdit (in Launchpad). Otherwise, use one of the command-line editors included with macOS: Nano nano is a simple command-line editor. Its a good introduction to using a command-line editor because it includes easy-to-follow on-screen help.
