The CSV filetype is a plain text file that holds lists of data and is useful for moving information between different software. Sometimes when opening a CSV file in Microsoft Excel the data appears jumbled such as in this example. This data is from an Atlas Copco MTF6000 controller and contains torque verification data. By examining the text I can see that the data is separated using semicolons, not commas. This would explain why Excel isnt properly displaying the data. To fix this issue we must open the Text Import Wizard. In older versions of Excel this is done by opening the CSV file using the File Import action, but in this newer version we must manually open the file by selecting File, then opening it from the disk or recent files list. Now that the Text Import Wizard is open we must tell Excel to use the Delimited data type which separates the text into fields using certain characters. Select Delimited and click next. Easy to organize and edit - CSV files are editable and the changes are not locked, unless of course a user locks a certain set of cells from editing. The good news is that unlike PDF downloads of spreadsheet data, CSVs can be changed later.
When working with a CSV file it is often necessary to find data contained within and sometimes replace it. Find Replace is used for just this. You can access it from the Edit Find Replace menu or by pressing Ctrl-F on the keyboard.
Replace text or numbers with the Find Replace Press Ctrl+H or go to Home Find Select Replace. In Find what, type the text or numbers you want to find. You can further define your search: Within: To search for data in a worksheet or in an entire workbook, select Sheet or Workbook.
Saving a CSV File With the Correct Data Format The spreadsheet DOES NOT contain Header Rows.
