Use double quotation marks around the title of an article or chapter, and italicize the title of a periodical, book, brochure, or report. Examples: From the book Study Guide (2000) or (Reading, 1999).
Titles of full works like books or newspapers should be italicized. Titles of short works like poems, articles, short stories, or chapters should be put in quotation marks. Titles of books that form a larger body of work may be put in quotation marks if the name of the book series is italicized.
Titles can be descriptive, declarative, or interrogative. They can also be classified as nominal, compound, or full-sentence titles.
Italicize titles if the source is self-contained and independent. Titles of books, plays, films, periodicals, databases, and websites are italicized. Place titles in quotation marks if the source is part of a larger work. Articles, essays, chapters, poems, webpages, songs, and speeches are placed in quotation marks.
Types of In-Text Citations If the title is not italicized in the reference list, use double quotation marks around the title in the in-text citation. Each in-text citation should correspond to a citation in the list of references at the end of the paper.
In-text citations include the last name of the author followed by a page number enclosed in parentheses. Heres a direct quote (Smith 8). If the authors name is not given, then use the first word or words of the title. Follow the same formatting that was used in the works cited list, such as quotation marks.
Write the title as you would a sentence, only capitalizing the first word of the sentence and subtitle, and any proper nouns. If you are citing a smaller work that is published in a larger work, provide the publication title of the larger work after the title of the smaller work. Place a comma at the end of this title.
