Converting date to text with Excels Text to Columns wizard In your Excel spreadsheet, select all of the dates you want to change to text. On the Data tab, find the Data Tools group, and click Text to Columns. On step 1 of the wizard, select the Delimited file type and click Next.
Note: Like in Windows 11, you can right-click the date and time tab and select Adjust date/time to change the time and date format. You can also access these settings via the Control Panel. To do so, open Control Panel Clock and Region Date and Time.
Its best to keep your original value in one cell, then use the TEXT function in another cell.Overview. FormulaDescription=TEXT(TODAY(),MM/DD/YY)Todays date in MM/DD/YY format, like 03/14/12=TEXT(TODAY(),DDDD)Todays day of the week, like Monday9 more rows
Press CTRL+1. In the Format Cells box, click the Number tab. In the Category list, click Date, and then choose a date format you want in Type.
Using TEXT function in Excel to convert date to text =TEXT(A1,mm/dd/yyyy) Some more formula examples and their results are shown below: The results of your TEXT formulas may look similar to this: =--TEXT(A1,mm/dd/yy) That was really easy, right?
The DATEVALUE function in Excel converts a date in the text format to a serial number that Excel recognizes as a date. So, the formula to convert a text value to date is as simple as =DATEVALUE(A1) , where A1 is a cell with a date stored as a text string.
Tip. If you want to quickly set date format in Excel to dd-mmm-yy, press Ctrl+Shift+#. Just keep in mind that this shortcut always applies the dd-mmm-yy format, like 01-Jan-15, regardless of your Windows Region settings.
Select the cells you want to format. Press CTRL+1. In the Format Cells box, click the Number tab. In the Category list, click Date, and then choose a date format you want in Type.
Heres one way to fix your problem: Type 0 into a cell and copy it. You may also copy a blank cell. Select all the dates in your range. With your dates still selected, press Ctrl + F1 (assuming youre on Windows) and then change the Number format to mm/dd/yyyy , dd/mm/yyyy or whichever you prefer.
The imported dates are probably stored as a text value, instead of real numbers, and that is causing the formatting problem. Note: Only positive numbers can be formatted as valid dates. If you format negative numbers as dates, the cells will be filled with number signs.
