this is the second in a series of tutorials on how to use the word templates for theses and dissertations at the University of Houston Clear Lake as we look in this folder we see two word files in here something to point out is that these are not regular document files these are dot X files or Microsoft Word template files thats different from a Microsoft Word document which is a docx file to understand how the template files work its important to point out that every Microsoft Word document is based on a template this is a normal document that you would open whenever you open Microsoft Word and you notice up here that there are a number of preset styles like normal which is Calibri font 11-point heading 1 heading 2 title the margins are set at 1 inch and so on so this is based on a template file that is exists on your computer that sends this information to Word document every time you open it up when were working with the template files the same exact principle is in place except

Reset your ribbon back to the default settings In the Customize the Ribbon window, select the default tab that you want to reset to the default settings. Click Reset, and then click Reset only selected Ribbon tab.
Newer versions of Word On the File tab, click Open. Go to C:\Users\user name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates. Open the Normal template (Normal. dotm). Make any changes that you want to the fonts, margins, spacing, and other settings. When you have finished, click the File tab, and then click Save.
Tools, Templates and Add-Ins and then click Organizer. The styles in your document will be indicated on the left side of the Organizer dialog box. Select all the heading styles and press delete a dialog box will appeared asked if you want to delete the styles and click on yes.
Go to the Home tab and click on the small launcher arrow in the lower right-hand corner of the font section to go to the Font dialog box. Select +Body and the size text you want, then click Set as Default in the lower left-hand corner.
Changing the Normal Style On the Home ribbon, in the style section, look for Normal. Right click on Normal, then select Modify. Review the settings. Make adjustments as needed in the Modify Style window, or by clicking on Format Font or Format Paragraph for more details.
On the View tab look for the Hidden files and folders and click the Show hidden files and folders radio button and click OK. Once you have located the Normal. dot file select it and delete it. The next time you open Word a new one will be created.
Found this method: Design tab press gallery down arrow and click Reset to Default Style Set
Tip: You can change the font and formatting of a heading style. Just select the heading text you want to customize, modify its styles the way you want, and then on the Home tab, in the Styles group, right-click the heading style that you customized and click Update Heading to Match Selection.
Ctrl-Shift-Z will reset any formatting changes made to text, such as font, size, bold etc.
