If you have a tintype, you should make a copy to display so the original can be kept safely stored. You can either scan a copy or take a photograph of the tintype. This is an easy way to preserve your familys memories for years to come.
Tintypes are extremely succeptable to damage. You can easily scratch off or wipe off the image. The metal should be stored in a glass container so that it is not touched by anything and does not need to be dusted. Even a soft dusting might wipe away portions of the image.
A tintype may be stored in an acid-free paper folder or envelope, or wrapped in acid-free tissue and placed in a storage box. Its best to keep it lying flat. For display, the tintype should be supported evenly on a mount or lie flat.
Finally, the plates are varnished to make them archival. Tintypes, when coated with varnish, cured, and stored properly, have been known to last well over 100 years.
Scanning these wonderful family treasures will allow you to print and work with the scan while safely storing the original. While the most common tintypes are small, the process often yielded a tremendous amount of detail. Scan your tintypes at a higher resolution in order to get a larger image and see far more detail.
We are also able to help you to restore your old images to their original beauty with our restoration service. Our team is happy to send you a prepaid mailing label to send in your case. We docHub out to you when receiving the package to discuss the details of your work.

Collectors typically will pay between $35 to $350 for a good quality antique tintype in good condition. Tintypes are more common photographs of the Victorian era and thus, they are not as valuable as ambrotypes or daguerreotypes which are more rare.
