The key to staining on the same day as prep is to allow all the visible water to dry off the deck. It can be applied to damp wood to the touch not soaking wet wood. Make sure that when applying you only apply as much stain as the wood can absorb. Do not over apply a semi-transparent deck stain.
Once the surface has dried you can see the extent of the spotty or shiny issue from over-applying. To fix it you can lightly wipe your deck with rags and mineral spirits to remove the excess stain that is on top of the wood. Note: it is very important to saturate all oily rags with water once done.
If blotches appear, gradually add varnish to the homemade mix or apply additional coats of conditioner until it blocks the blotch. Don't exceed one part varnish to two parts mineral spirits. Lightly sand the wash-coated surface using the same grit you used on the unfinished wood.
Remove any damaged deck boards and cut off the rotted portion—all the way back to the centerline of the nearest joist. Use deck screws to reattach the good end, then cut a piece of like decking to fill the gap, and screw it to the joists. Check the handrails and balusters, then replace any damaged sections.
The first and most obvious reason to roll on deck stain as opposed to brushing it on is that the former allows you to cover a much larger surface area in less time. Rollers are wider, more efficient, and easier to operate. Additionally, using a roller helps you achieve a smoother finish.
When deck stain is over-applied, the excess stain that was not absorbed by the wood remains on top of the surface and dries to a crusty shiny finish. This problem results in peeling, flaking, cracking and an overall decrease in appearance.

Restore A Deck Stain Application Tips We recommend allowing the surface to dry for 24 hours before walking or placing furniture on the surface.
Once all vertical surfaces are stained, apply one coat of Restore-A-Deck Semi-Transparent Wood Stain to flooring and horizontal surfaces, ensuring the entire floor is covered. Reapply a second light coat 20 minutes to an hour after the first coat has been applied to all flooring and horizontal areas.
When in Doubt, Strip Away the Old Stain. Generally speaking, it's a good idea to completely remove all traces of the previous coat of deck stain before applying a new one. The reasons for this may be fairly obvious -- a previous coat of stain might be peeling away from the surface in several areas.
